The ‘Daily Practice’ Gremlin:

T H E L U X U R Y O F 1 5 M I N S

There are two types of people in this life. Gremlins and non-Gremlins.

If you’re a non-Gremlin, you can do your service work worldwide or operate at your corporate 9-5 and function happily. But if you’re a Gremlin, when you’re not creatively fulfilled, you physically CANNOT function at maximum level.

When you’re a Gremlin, you must do your service work AND light your creative fire.

Because if you're a Gremlin, the creative work makes you into the strong, vibrant person you need to be to do the service work. If you’re a Gremlin, you can’t choose between service or personal creation. It's both. WE HAVE to do both. There is no other way.

If all the gremlins here did 15 mins a day of their creative practice, we would be in much better health. Not even creative health. Health. Overall fitness, longevity and kindness. This thought comes off the back of a conversation I had this week.

The Gremlin in question cannot be named, but he is the record producer of major artists and has worked on loads of hits you’d know. He’s at a point in his life where he has achieved global success, reached his career peak, and now his purpose is serving humanity and raising consciousness.

Record Producer Gremlin feels his energy must now be put towards more prominent causes because that’s the higher calling. And so, in comparison, he feels guilty, and it feels trivial when he makes music. And yet, he lights up after doing it one hour a week. He is his best self when he taps into his creative self, and he can give more lovingly when he has fed his Gremlin.

As Gremlins, we can’t be feeding others from empty paws. Maybe we can give from old reserves for some months, but if you’re genuinely creative, eventually, that offering will turn into resentment without replenishing the stocks.

And so, the 15 mins a day comes in. Morning pages from the Artists Way, morning paintings for me, a jam of messing with beats for you - whatever it is, it’s got to happen.

This is what I am realising. The 15 mins are not trivial. Those 15 mins of colouring may look like child’s play, but that’s precisely what we need to do the hard, heavy, adult lifting of life.

I could go on, but the point is we are all in this together; we are on each other’s side and rooting for each other. Imagine the creative world we can build if we tap into this daily.

15 mins for us, and then we give to the world. I need you, and you need me.
