Gremlin (noun) - an imaginary mischievous creature that causes trouble to a system.
Taking you along the ride as I question everything and bring home a new truth every Sunday.
The ‘Hugh Jackman’ Gremlin:
There is no gap between my dreams and reality and no time between space. Just catching a whiff of Jackman and the Greatest Showman character reminded me to keep going and make. And with that, I open my wild heart, keep my back strong, and say yes to life. Over and over until my dreams spin into reality. To do until I die.
The ‘Naive’ Gremlin:
This is a reminder of the importance of discerning whom we listen to and the consequences that follow when we disregard our better judgment… While it sounded right then, it was a messy solution to a deeper problem. Ultimately I listened to the wrong person when I should have listened to myself first.
The ‘Vera Wang’ Gremlin:
I met Vera Wang on the front carriage of the Eurostar. She was dripping in style. Black Prada glasses cover her forehead to the bridge of her nose, and a solid black centre part covers her temples.
The ‘Emotional’ Gremlin:
Picture the scene, it’s my last evening in Bali, and I have a leaving meal planned. One hour before we meet for dinner, I get a DM from Igor, a filmmaker I love. “Sorry I didn’t reply; I’ve been super busy. I just listened to your voice note and track, and I love it, but you leave tomorrow. I can come right now to film something at sunset?”
The Gremlin Reloaded:
One year ago, The Gremlins looked more like a “show and tell” of my work. About halfway through the year, things changed, and The Gremlins became a way to communicate the lessons I am learning. This seems to be the theme of my life right now - To 'Evolve Out Loud' and share the evolution because there is no shame in changing.
The ‘Private’ Gremlin:
As an artist, where is the boundary between using your experience as a source of inspiration and protecting the privacy of others?
The ‘Struggling’ Gremlin:
Here’s the thing that no one tells us as creatives. The behind-the-scenes emotional labour of turning life into art will never stop. It is messy, triggers us at inconvenient times, and isn’t easy to explain. Oh, and one more thing, if the creation is aligned to purpose… then emotional work is unavoidable.
The ‘Imposter’ Gremlin:
Welcome to the three-way conversation between my fear, my curiosity and a wise pianist named Sam.* This is how, together, we three navigated doing something I was afraid to do; singing to something with ears.
The ‘Trembling’ Gremlin
"The nerves won't go," Sunny told me across from her guitar. Her big brown eyes and open heart filled the distance between us strangers, and something within me began to soften.
The ‘Daily Practice’ Gremlin:
If you’re a non-Gremlin, you can do your service work worldwide or operate at your corporate 9-5 and function happily. But if you’re a Gremlin, when you’re not creatively fulfilled, you physically CANNOT function at maximum level.
The ‘40 Day Challenge’ Gremlin
Two weeks ago, I gave myself a mini-challenge. I asked myself, can I make, record and share one freestyle a day? “Keep it simple stupid” was the theme.
The ‘Evolving’ Gremlin:
He said something I’d never heard before, and I hope I never forget. He told me that “not everyone will agree with you, and you’ll be judged” - yes, I know this, I thought. And I thought he would follow it with, “but you’ve got to ignore that and do you anyways”.
The ‘Big Fish’ Gremlin
It’s the same with us as creatives; though we can’t control what downloads will come as we meditate/pray, we can at least show up in silence and tune our senses to recognise & reel in the fish.
The ‘Silent’ Gremlin:
“There are two types of people those that speak to avoid the silence and those that speak to praise the silence,” I wrote in a poem this week dedicated to the ten days I spent on Vipassana.
The ‘Courageous’ Gremlin:
Often, we need the fear of staying the same to outweigh the fear of change to step out - it’s why we wait for someone to leave to say I love you and wait for time to run out to create.
The ‘Pharrell’ Gremlin:
‘If the Rhianna bowl hadn’t convinced you yet, then Pharrell at Louis Vuitton surely will: The lines between media, entertainment and business aren’t just blurred, they no longer exist’.
The ‘Secret Art Lover’ Gremlin:
This is a story about my friend Greg and how he inspires me to share who I am. Once I knew the context and backlash Greg would face for posting a picture of Rothko every week I realised … you just don’t know who will connect with your art and how it will be used as a bridge to self understanding. Now, or in the future.
The ‘LOVE’ Gremlin:
Love is a private and sacred topic to me and so I protect my loved ones and keep this piece of myself behind the scenes. And yet, stepping into the dojo of love is how I evolve in the world, and it is so much part of my creative process.
The ‘Power Hungry’ Gremlin:
The religions, the relationships, the politicians that use power to disempower run from finite resources of fear and eventually their power will run out.
The ‘Off Grid’ Gremlin:
“I’m phone-less by choice” I say to the judging eyes of yet another person who’s surprised that such a choice even still exists in modern life. It’s been 8 weeks since I quite literally threw my phone to the sharks in the Indian Ocean. Whilst the actual scenario was more ‘clumsy Gremlin’ than James Bond, it’s still a bad-ass way to taste off grid life.
